Greaves Diesel Gensets

How often should you service a diesel generator: A complete maintenance guide

Diesel generators: Reliable power for every need

There’s a reason diesel generators can still be found everywhere from war zones to wedding venues. They’ve been holding the fort when the grid gives up. In fact, long before satellite internet reached the hills of Himachal or the islands of Lakshadweep, gensets were already there, humming away, powering hospitals, construction sites, research camps and more.

Why?

Because setting up a full-blown electrical grid is not always practical or immediate. You need something compact, dependable and built to last. That’s where diesel gensets come in.

Greaves Engineering has been at the forefront of this space, offering a comprehensive range of diesel gensets from 5 kVA to 2250 kVA, including the Mega Series for large-scale, high-demand applications and CPCB IV+ compliant dg sets that meet the latest emission norms while ensuring performance.  Each one is designed to deliver efficiency, low-noise operation and durability, making them some of the most reliable gensets in the market.

But even the toughest diesel genset needs proper care to perform at its best. Neglecting maintenance not only affects efficiency but can also lead to costly breakdowns and downtime.

So how do you keep your genset in top shape?

Key maintenance practices to ensure long-term reliability of your diesel genset

Like any workhorse, a diesel genset needs regular TLC.

  • Oil changes and coolant checks

Engine oil is the lifeblood of any diesel genset. It lubricates, cools and protects internal components from wear and tear. Over time, heat and continuous operation degrade oil quality. For most dg sets, changing the oil and filters every 250 hours is recommended.

On the other hand, coolants prevent overheating and keep metal components from

expanding and cracking. Always check coolant levels before long usage cycles,

especially if your genset is stationed in a high-temperature zone.

With Greaves gensets, timely oil and coolant maintenance is straightforward, thanks to accessible service points and guidance from 120+ Greaves service centres.

  • Clean air filter

A clogged air filter reduces efficiency and puts more strain on the engine of your dg set. If your diesel genset is in a dusty area (construction sites, deserts, even cities during summer), check that filter regularly and replace it as needed.

Greaves offers genuine spare parts and filter replacements through its authorised dealer and service network, ensuring optimal performance and longer genset life.

  • Battery health

A well-maintained battery ensures your dg set starts instantly when needed. Check for corrosion, clean terminals and test voltage monthly. A flat or corroded battery can bring your entire operation to a halt. And in cold locations, weak batteries are the first to give up.

The Greaves One app allows remote performance monitoring, including battery health indicators, minimising downtime.

  • General inspection

Sometimes all you need to do is just look for leaks, loose bolts, frayed wires, damaged insulation or anything that seems off. These small signs are your early warning system, allowing you to prevent bigger problems before they take your genset offline.

The Greaves One app allows you to monitor performance parameters remotely, so you can spot irregularities without being physically present at the site.

  • Ensure proper ventilation

Diesel generators tend to generate a lot of heat. Without good airflow, they’ll overheat and wear out faster. Always position your genset in a cool, open and well-ventilated space.

Greaves gensets are designed to operate in extreme conditions, ranging from -5°C to +50°C, but proper placement ensures your dg set runs optimally and avoids overheating.

  • Monitor oil levels

Higher the heat, higher will be the oil consumption. Long usage hours in hot or humid conditions can quietly drain oil levels. Make it a habit to check oil between major service intervals.

Greaves service partners offer quick oil top-up and quality checks to keep performance consistent.

Ensuring optimal working conditions

Even the most robust diesel gensets perform best when their surroundings are well-maintained. Environmental factors directly affect efficiency, reliability and service life.

From rain to snow, your genset sees it all. Waterproof covers, elevated platforms (to avoid flooding) and heat-resistant enclosures go a long way in prolonging the life of your generator.

Too much moisture, especially in mountainous or coastal zones, can eat away at your wiring and corrode internal parts. Cold environments also put strain on batteries and fuel systems. Place your genset where it’s safe from the elements, but still gets good airflow.

Moreover, sandstorms, construction debris and even birds nesting nearby can block ventilation, clog filters or damage internal parts. Keep the area around your genset clean.

With a Greaves genset, you already start with dependable engineering while the right operating environment ensures it stays that way.

How often should you service your diesel generator

Every brand has its own maintenance practice and schedule. Here’s how Greaves Engineering recommends maintaining your CPCB IV+ gensets for reliable performance and longer life.

Daily/Monthly checks

  • Check oil level in the sump
  • Ensure fuel level in tank
  • Check belt tension
  • Inspect battery condition
  • Check water level in the radiator
  • Verify DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) level and look for DEF line leakages

Yearly checks

  • Change engine oil and clean the radiator fins (every 750 hrs or 1 year, whichever is earlier)
  • Change coarse fuel filter
  • Change air filter element
  • Change filter on the feed pump
  • Change oil filter cartridge
  • Change fuel filter cartridge
  • Check up valve clearance and set if necessary (first at 60 hrs and then every 750 hrs)
  • Clean up the fuel tank
  • Clean up the exhaust silencer

Following this schedule with Greaves-approved Maxtherm oils and coolants ensures compliance, optimised performance and longer genset life.

Why it all matters

Reliable genset performance isn’t just about ticking boxes on a checklist. It’s about keeping lights on in an ICU, powering a data centre or ensuring guests don’t check out of your eco-resort halfway through their stay.

When you maintain your genset right, you’re also indirectly supporting an entire ecosystem. Reliable power means smoother hospitality experiences. Smoother operations create more jobs. And when infrastructure holds strong, people stay, businesses grow and communities thrive.

The bigger picture

Newer may be the future. But diesel gensets aren’t disappearing anytime soon. For many businesses, especially in off-grid areas, they’re still the most economical and reliable option.

That’s why maintenance isn’t just a chore, it’s a commitment. One to performance, uptime and to peace of mind.

Greaves Engineering understands that. Their gensets are built to last, but they’re only as good as the care they receive. So whether you’re powering a farm in the hills or a telecom tower in the back of beyond, treat your dg set right.

It’s more than a backup. It’s your backbone for reliable energy solutions.
